To the Death
April 2011
Produced and Directed by Danielle French in co-production with The Banff Centre. Danielle gratefully acknowledges the support of the Alberta Foundation for the Arts. A short film set to a song of the same name, found on Danielle's 2003 release piece.
To the Death reveals the psyche of Scarlett as she attends a vaudeville-style performance at The Club, a surreal cabaret she appears to frequent. Giving herself a Tarot reading, Scarlett manifests The Club out of thin air and instigates the patrons and performers into action. Drawing on the principles in Jungian psychology where all the characters in our dreams are aspects of our own psyche, the odd and unusual characters in The Club represent archetypal aspects of Scarlett's psyche, personified.
A dark character, Raven, represents Scarlett's shadow-self trying to surface. He attempts to follow her into The Club but is denied entry. Finding a backstage entrance he sneaks in, eventually making his way to Scarlett. When she catches a glimpse of him reflected in her compact mirror she is startled and turns to face him, but finds he has disappeared... or perhaps he was never really there.

Time to Kill
September, 2008
Produced and Directed by Danielle French in co-production with The Banff Centre. Danielle gratefully acknowledges the support of the Canada Council for the Arts and the Alberta Foundation for the Arts. A short film set to a song of the same name, found on Danielle's 2007 release Shadows.
Dramatizing the scenarios portrayed in Danielle's song, Time to Kill, this film presents a rather surreal twist on the age-old boy-meets-girl-story. The main characters, Scarlett and Raven, spot each other across the room at a fantasy-themed costume party and are irresistibly drawn to one another. Scarlett begins to fantasize a sequence of vignettes unfolds in which Scarlett imagines a variety of unusual locations where she and Raven could perhaps meet for a bizarre series of dream dates that is, if they both have time to kill.
